Matrix A Modern Mythology

   Whatever the ancient seers discovered about the infinite range of the universe at the subtlest level of their consciousness was passed down in the form of seemingly mythological stories, which in fact are simple symbols used to describe greater truths. Everyone likes a good story.

 The Power of Myth

            A lost gold coin is found by means of a penny candle;

            the deepest truth is found by means of a simple story.

    Anthony De Mello, One Minute Wisdom

 We use mythology  as the primary tool to teach our children. Using a story to pass on profound knowledge is a time-honored tradition. Unfortunately, over the years, many of these mythological tales got dismissed as fairy tales with no factual or scientific basis. The Truth could not be farther from this. The ignorant disregard the power of these myths because they only look at the superficial stories and not the meaning which they point to. Many people, like the Cipher in the first Matrix movie, believe that ignorance is bliss and would prefer to stay trapped in the world of sensory pleasure rather than understand the deepest meaning of life. But as the old Sufi saying goes,    If a man points at the moon, only an idiot looks at the finger.

             In his book, The Mythic Image, Joseph Campbell revolutionized the way we think about the power of mythological symbols to influence our lives. To reveal the secrets of our existence, the Wachowski brothers took it one step further by incorporating these principles into popular entertainment.

 Computer Simulated Worlds

Read myths. They teach you that you can turn inward, and you begin to get the message out of the symbols. Most traditions realize this — that deities are personifications, not facts. They are metaphors. It teaches you about your mystery of your own life.    Joseph Cambell, The Way of Myth

                       Mythology helps us comprehend abstract concepts with recognizable symbols and characters. In The Matrix Trilogy, the Wachowski brothers used the familiar world of computer technology, to examine universal truths about the nature of reality. Computers can now do much more than calculate. With the advent of digital signal processing, they can simulate video, music, art, and even primitive feelings or emotions. MIT computer simulation experts, Ed Fredkin and Tom Toffoli, believe that the universe is nothing more than a giant computer and that all creation — stars, mountains, trees, fish, birds, animals, humans, and all our thoughts — are like virtual images generated by a computer, the mind being the software operating within the hardware of the brain or physical world, a not dissimilar concept to the Vedic view of the world as Maya or illusion.

            In his book Omega Point, physicist Frank Tipler explains that if computers could simulate consciousness and a whole community of conscious beings, from the viewpoint of the beings within the computer, the simulated world would be real. The key question then would be, do the simulated people exist? As far as the simulated people can tell, they do. The simulated people in the computer perform thinking and action and interact with the environment and within themselves as real people do. There is no way for the people inside the computer to know if they are simulated or real. They can’t feel the real substance, the physical computer, from where they are, inside the program. And of course, the real question is: if this is true in relation to the universe, can we know who is the computer programmer?

            Using these concepts of computer simulation and artificial intelligence, the Wachowski brothers have imagined a powerful mythology to explain the mystery of our existence. In their story, a few humans break free from the control of a computer-simulated world. They literally wake up from the illusion of reality created by the computer, and liberate others from their false sense of reality. Isn’t this just what the great spiritual teachers of our world do, those enlightened few who wake up from the slumber of ignorance and lead others out of their ignorance? Isn’t Neo symbolic of the great spiritual leaders who come to Earth from time to time to save mankind from their state of dullness? The Matrix movies, in the form of popular entertainment, help us to understand the nature of life and our true glorious identity as cosmic beings.
