There is a difference between these two terms. One can be spiritual and need not be religious and vice versa. To be religious means more of a fanatic version in a “belief system”.

           To be spiritual means to be very enquiring attitude. Being spiritual means  to enquire about our own spirit or nature. This enquiring attitude  is not because of any fear in life, but because of curiosity which is the characteristic feature that distinguish from a man and an animal. To be human is not to just eat, have sex and die. Every  animal does eat, have sex and die. But human is an evolved animal who has the  “Quest” to know the mystery of this universe and life.

           Being spiritual is a more matured or advanced level of evolutionary thinking. The highest  evolved people are spiritual. Again be clear about the term “Spiritual”. Spiritual does not mean to be belonging to a  belief system.

          Religious people are in the path of evolution (please excuse me, If I hurt anyone). I do not mean to demean religious people. Being  atheist or religious  are  like students at different levels of understanding. Religious people later mature to become Spiritual, so could an atheist mature to be a spiritual, when their search is without a biased attitude.

             Atheist are at the level of religious people, the only difference is that  they are at the other direction. Both the religious and atheist are fanatic about a certain belief.  The religious strongly believe in a God and Atheist strongly believe there is no God.

 Does it mean atheist and religious do not enquire?

            Religious and atheist individuals can also be of enquiring nature. But there is a difference. They have already concluded about an opinion before they begin the search. Their search is biased because what they look for is only for a proof to defend  their belief. With the strong background in his mind about God, the theist looks for evidence to prove he is right. The atheist is no different from the theist who  finds convincing evidences to defend their belief. In other words an atheist search for only proof to disprove God.

            The spiritual on the other hand with an unbiased mind  sees the reality as it is. The spiritual enquires without the belief  or disbelief of God.  Like a Judge spiritual view is balanced and finds the truth like a judge enquiring the “case”.  Theist and atheist have strong concepts and so miss the truth like the attorneys who defend for their client. A judge without a strong conviction just looks at the facts and he alone gets the truth.

            In further discussion we will understand how a spiritual sees the Truth of this universe, its origin, evolution, purpose of man’s life etc. We will see how the spiritual discover the Truth which does not contradict rational thinking.
